Let’s talk about the ‘P’ word…
That word being packaging.
We get all sorts of questions about how our products are packaged, so we thought we’d break it down honestly — no greenwashing here.
Understanding Plastic Types
Before we start, did you know there are many distinct types of plastic, each with different recycling abilities?
For an in-depth look, check out this guide:

What We Use
We mostly use Grade 5 plastic in our packaging. This includes:
- Our Grab’N’Go range of café cookies
- Artisan and pantry pack range inserts
- Single-wrapped cookies (stars, hearts)
Grade 5 plastic is designed to be circular — it can be saved, dropped into a soft plastics recycling bin (at most supermarkets), broken down, and made into more packaging. This:
- Prevents the creation of new plastic
- Diverts plastic from landfill (only if you recycle it)
We’ve got plans to make recycling even easier for our customers next year – watch this space!
Ginger Fingers Trays
The trays that hold our Ginger Fingers are currently in transition:
- Previously made with PVC (Recycle 3)
- Now moving to PET (Recycle 1)
PET trays are widely recyclable in NZ (97% of Kiwis have access).
Just give them a clean and pop them in your kerbside recycling.
It's not perfect — but it’s a lot better than Tetra Pak or Styrofoam.
Cardboard & Vegetable Ink
Most of our packaging is cardboard — one of the best materials for the environment.
✅ Flatten your boxes and recycle them — it saves water and energy
✅ We print using vegetable ink
✅ We support a carboNZero certified local printer
What About Compostables?
Yes, we’ve looked into compostable options.
But the technology still isn’t quite there — and unfortunately, neither are our landfills.
We’re Always Improving
We’re committed to doing better and evolving our packaging as more sustainable options become available.
